Louisiana Tobacco and Health Youth Advisory Board Application FAQ

The Louisiana Tobacco and Health Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a youth-led advisory group focused on childhood tobacco/vaping and health issues. The youth leaders provide valuable perspectives on the dangers to tobacco, nicotine, and address other health concerns to a variety of stakeholders and commit to making impactful changes within their own schools and communities.

  • Youth Advisory Board members build on their prior local successes, connecting and
sharing experiences with one another, contributing solutions they’ve implemented for
others to learn from, and gaining new ideas to continue to make a difference—locally,
    regionally, and statewide.
  • Members are responsible for educating community members on the importance of
healthy living and leading efforts to make healthy changes in their own neighborhoods
    and school districts.
  • Youth Advisory Board members serve as thought-leaders to the Tobacco-Free Louisiana
Coalition, The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living, and external stakeholders
by offering valuable perspectives on childhood tobacco/vaping/nicotine and health issues
that professionals in the public health and education fields, American consumers, elected
officials, the media and other youth want to hear from young people.
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 14-17 years old when membership begins and live in Louisiana.
  • They do not have to be current Next Era members, but current/past membership is required.

Applicants will be asked to submit an application, permission slip (signed by applicant and a parent or guardian).

Each year, we have several openings on the Board from members who have served their term limit, graduated from high school or decide to pursue other opportunities.

  • Youth Advisory Board members can serve up to three years total on the Board or until they graduate high school (whichever comes first).
  • We ask all returning Board members who wish to serve a second- or third-year term to go
through a “recommitment” process, which includes completing a set of questions and sign a letter of recommitment for the following year.
